Wooden Toy Manufacturers in the USA
US buyers who search for a wooden toy manufacturer are usually weighing two very different supply bases: a producer inside the United States, and a factory-direct import. This page sets out what actually differs, what US law requires either way, and the numbers our own factory works to.
The two supply bases, compared honestly
A domestic US producer is close to you. You can drive to the plant, iterate on a sample in a week and reorder in small quantities. What you pay for that is a higher unit cost and, in wood, a narrower tooling base: most US capacity in this category is built around craft, furniture and contract work rather than wooden toy ranges.
A factory-direct import moves the same product at a much lower unit cost and gives you access to tooling that already exists, but it puts distance, freight and a documentation load between you and the goods. Neither model is wrong; the mistake is choosing one without pricing the other.
Three questions usually decide it: how much of your item is genuinely custom, how large is the first order, and who is signing the children's product paperwork.
What US law requires of a wooden toy
Toys are a regulated children's product in the United States, and two sets of rules apply to a wooden toy sold to a US consumer.
- ASTM F963 is the mandatory toy safety standard, enforced through 16 CFR Part 1250. It covers mechanical and physical properties, flammability, and the migration of certain elements from surface coatings.
- CPSIA adds the lead and phthalate limits, the third-party testing requirement and the Children's Product Certificate (CPC) that has to accompany the shipment.
Testing has to be carried out by a CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory, per item and per material combination, because a change of wood species, paint or hardware is a change of product.
Who issues the CPC, and what we supply
For an imported children's product the CPC is signed by the US-side party, the importer of record, not by the factory. That is worth settling early, because it decides who holds the testing file.
What we supply is the evidence the certificate rests on: the test report for the item against ASTM F963 and the CPSIA limits, issued by a CPSC-accepted laboratory; the material and coating declarations the laboratory asks for; and the item specification, including carton and packaging data. Where an item changes between orders, the report is reissued for the changed item rather than carried over.
The tracking label required on the product and its packaging is produced to the artwork you approve, so it is printed at the factory instead of being applied after arrival.
Cost, MOQ and the container maths
Once compliance is set, the order economics come down to three numbers: the unit price, the minimum you have to buy to get it, and how much of the container you fill.
In-stock wooden toys start at 50 pieces per item, which is deliberately low enough to test a range before committing to volume. Fully custom work is quoted per product, because the minimum depends on the tooling and on how much of the item is new.
Freight is the part first orders most often get wrong. We publish the carton data for our own range, carton size, CBM, pieces per carton, gross and net weight, and the 20 ft and 40 ft loading quantity per item, so the shipment can be priced before the goods are: see the wooden toy container loading table, alongside what drives the unit cost and how MOQ is set.
Shipping from Yunhe to a US port
Orders leave from Ningbo or Shanghai, usually on FOB terms with the forwarder you nominate. Mixed orders can be consolidated into a single shipment, so a first order can carry several wooden toy references rather than committing to a container of one item.
Two decisions change what you receive: whether the goods ship as plain export cartons or as retail-ready packaging, and whether they are packed for a container move or for a parcel network such as FBA. Retail boxing, barcodes and FBA labels are produced to your artwork at the factory. See Incoterms and cartons and wooden toys for Amazon sellers.
Ordering: what we need from you
To quote a wooden toy programme we need the item or reference, the target quantity, the market you sell in, the age grade on the packaging, whether the item itself or only the artwork is custom, and the packaging format. With those answers we can come back with a price, a sample plan and the testing the order will require.

Frequently asked questions
Do you supply US buyers directly, or only through importers?
Both. We work with US importers, wholesalers and brands, and we also ship direct to companies that handle their own customs entry. What we do not do is sign the Children's Product Certificate on your behalf: that is issued by the US-side party.
Who issues the Children's Product Certificate for a US order?
The importer or US manufacturer signs the CPC. We supply the per-item test reports from a CPSC-accepted laboratory, the material and coating declarations behind them, and the item specification the certificate references.
Is ASTM F963 testing included in the unit price?
No. Testing is charged per item and per material combination, because it is carried out before production and holds only for the item as tested. We quote it alongside the goods so it stays visible rather than being absorbed into the unit price.
What is the minimum order for a US buyer?
In-stock wooden toys start at 50 pieces per item. Custom and private-label items are quoted per product, because the minimum depends on the tooling and the amount of customisation.
Can the order be packed for Amazon?
Yes. Retail boxes, barcodes, FBA labels and poly bagging are produced to your artwork at the factory, and the carton data for the item is available before you book the shipment.
How long from order confirmation to a US port?
Production runs around 30 days after confirmation, subject to complexity, material and quantity. Ocean transit and the inland leg are booked by your forwarder, and we hand over the documents and carton marks for that booking.
