Wooden Building Blocks

Blocks, stacking stones and city sets in pine and beech. Stock designs from 50 pcs, custom colours and carton artwork, EN71 and ASTM F963 test reports on file.

Building blocks are sold on piece count, colour and weight, and they are one of the few wooden toy categories where a buyer can build a whole programme from one construction. We manufacture wooden building blocks in Yunhe, Zhejiang and supply them factory direct to importers, wholesalers and toy brands in Europe, North America and Oceania.

Wooden building blocks wholesale: the decisions behind the set

A block set looks like the simplest product in a wooden toy range. In practice the specification decides the retail price, the shipping cost and how the item survives a child dropping it on a hard floor. Buyers who settle piece count, unit sizes, finish and storage before sampling avoid the usual two or three sample rounds.

Piece count and set structure

  • Small sets, 20 to 30 pieces. Entry price points, gift and impulse purchases, and the item a retailer uses to test the category.
  • Mid sets, 50 to 60 pieces. The volume range for construction play, usually packed in a bucket, tub or wooden box.
  • Large sets, 100 pieces and up. Pre-school, classroom and premium gift, where the box or bag becomes part of the product.

Unit sizes, shapes and safety

Standard unit blocks are sized so the pieces relate to each other, which is what makes the play work. For younger children, larger minimum dimensions matter because they keep the pieces out of the small-parts category and make them easier to grip. Whatever the size, the points that decide an EN71 or ASTM F963 outcome are the same: no sharp edges or splinters, no pieces that break into small parts, and paint that passes migration limits. We produce to EN71 (EU) and ASTM F963 (US) requirements and supply the test reports covering the items you order.

Finish, colour and print

Natural finish sells as an educational and Montessori-friendly product; painted blocks carry alphabet, number and picture print and sell as a learning item. Both routes have cost implications, print being the more expensive, and both have to pass the same paint-migration requirements. Colour consistency between shipments is what buyers complain about most when production is split across suppliers, which is one reason to keep the whole set in one factory.

Weight, storage and freight

Blocks are dense, so a large set is a heavy carton. Storage format decides a good part of the landed cost: a cotton bag is light and cheap to ship, while a bucket or a wooden box adds volume and weight but makes the product shelf-ready. If you sell through retail, the storage container is usually part of the purchase decision for the shopper, so it is worth settling early rather than treating it as packaging.

Branding

Most block programmes are bought under the buyer's brand. We apply your artwork, barcode, age marking and the labelling your market requires, and we produce to your approved pre-production sample. See private label wooden toys, or OEM wooden toys for a new shape or set developed to your brief.

Ordering

In-stock sets start at 50 pieces per item. Samples are charged per item: in-stock items are normally dispatched within 48 hours and custom sampling takes about 10 days, with the sample fee deducted from the bulk order once the order for that item reaches 1,000 pieces. Production typically runs about 30 days after order confirmation. Send us your list for an item-by-item quotation.

Wooden building block MOQ, samples and lead times

Block sets are sold on piece count, shape mix and packing format, and those three points are also what the quotation depends on.

How to compare wooden building block suppliers

Six questions separate a supplier who can run this line year after year from one who can only quote it once.

  • Does the factory make it, or buy it in? Ask which plant produces the item and whether the woodworking and the painting happen in the same place. Ours are made in our own 6,000 m2 plant in Yunhe, Zhejiang.
  • Are the test reports for this exact item? A report has to name the model you are buying, not a similar one from the same family. We supply the reports that cover the items on your order.
  • What happens on the repeat order? Finish, colour and dimensions have to stay put between the first order and the fourth. Automatic woodworking and painting lines are what make that repeatable.
  • Who decides the carton? Carton dimensions and packing format move the landed cost more than a small change in unit price, so they belong in the quotation, not in the shipping discussion.
  • What is the position on spare parts? Missing or damaged components are the most common after-sales claim on wooden toys; ask how replacements are handled and at what point.
  • Is the shape mix written into the specification? A block set is defined by its shape list, and an approximate list is what makes the bulk order differ from the sample.

What usually goes wrong on wooden building block orders

  • Piece count and shape mix agreed loosely, so the sample and the bulk order do not match.
  • Finish decided late. Natural, painted and printed blocks carry different tooling, different surface treatment and different migration testing.
  • Packing format chosen last. Tubs, trays and printed boxes change both the carton cube and the shelf price point.
