Stock vs Custom Wooden Toys

Stock and custom are two different buying routes, not two prices for the same item. Stock uses an existing design and existing tooling; custom starts from a drawing, a sample or a reference and creates a new specification. The MOQ, sampling time, packaging and test file all change with the route.

Quick answer

Buyer situationUsually the better routeWhy
Testing a product line or a new marketStockExisting design, lower MOQ and no new tooling decision.
Needing a differentiated shape, size or mechanismCustomThe design has to be created, sampled and tested as a new item.
Wanting your own brand and packaging on a proven itemHybrid: stock design plus custom colour, logo or cartonKeeps the core design while changing the brand-facing parts.
Ordering a large volume with a fixed specificationCustomThe tooling, BOM and test file can be set for the exact item.
Reordering quickly for a seasonal windowStock, or a previously approved custom itemA new custom item needs sampling and testing before production.

What "stock" means

A stock item is a design the factory already makes. The drawings, tooling, process and usually the test report already exist. The buyer chooses from the range, confirms the quantity and the market, and the factory produces against the existing specification.

Stock does not mean no choice. Depending on the item, the buyer may be able to change the paint colour, the logo, the carton artwork or the way the items are packed. Those changes still have to be checked: a new paint or a new printed carton can change the material combination described in the test file.

What "custom" means

A custom item starts from a drawing, a 3D file, a physical sample or a reference product. The factory has to confirm the construction, the wood, the finish, the hardware, the packaging and the test route before it can quote. A sample is usually made and approved before production.

Custom is not only a new shape. A change of size, wood species, joint, mechanism, paint system or age grade can be enough to make the item a new specification. The buyer should treat those changes as part of the project, not as a last-minute adjustment.

When stock is the better first order

  • You need to test demand. A stock item lets you put a real product in front of buyers before committing to a new design.
  • Your budget is limited. Stock avoids new tooling and a custom sampling cycle.
  • You need a seasonal window. An existing item can usually move faster than a new one.
  • You want to test a market's compliance route. A proven item with an existing test file is easier to review than a new construction.
  • You sell a curated range. A retailer or distributor may prefer to mix proven stock items rather than develop every shape.

When custom is the better route

  • Your brand depends on a distinct shape. If the product has to look different from what is already on the shelf, stock will not solve it.
  • You need a specific size, mechanism or age grade. A new function or a new user group changes the design and the test requirements.
  • You want control over the full packaging and instruction set. Custom packaging can be designed around the item and the sales channel.
  • You have a volume that supports tooling. Custom makes more sense when the order size can absorb the sampling and set-up cost.
  • You need a repeatable specification for reorders. A custom item with a fixed BOM and test file is easier to control over multiple shipments.

The hybrid route most buyers actually use

Many first orders are neither pure stock nor pure custom. The buyer chooses a stock shape and changes the paint colour, the logo, the carton or the pack quantity. This keeps the core tooling and construction while giving the buyer a branded product.

The hybrid route still needs a change review. A new paint, a new printed carton or a new age label can affect the test file. The factory should confirm which changes are covered by the existing report and which ones need a new sample or test.

Compliance differences

A stock item is not automatically compliant for every market. The existing report has to match the item, the materials, the coating and the market the buyer is selling into. A custom item needs its own review because the construction, materials or finish may be different.

  • Stock with no changes. Check that the report covers the exact item and the target market.
  • Stock with a colour or packaging change. Check whether the change affects the tested material combination.
  • Custom item. Plan sampling and testing before the production date, not after the order is confirmed.
  • Change of supplier or material. Treat it as a material change and review the file again.

How to choose the route

  1. Define the job the toy has to do and the age group it is for.
  2. Decide whether the shape, size or mechanism must be unique.
  3. Set a realistic first-order quantity and a budget for sampling.
  4. Check the target market's test and labelling requirements.
  5. Ask the factory which stock items can be branded without a new tool.
  6. If custom, ask for the sampling steps, the approval points and the test plan in writing.
  7. Confirm the reorder specification before the first shipment.

What we need to quote either route

For stock, send the item reference, the quantity, the market and any branding you want. For custom, send the drawing or 3D file, the reference sample, the target quantity, the age group and the market. We will confirm the route, the sample steps, the MOQ direction and the documentation we can provide before quoting.

If the custom route changes the construction, compare laser cutting vs CNC routing before sampling, and review pad printing vs screen printing if the design depends on a logo or printed face.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MOQ for stock wooden toys?

Stock items can start from 50 pieces per item, subject to availability and the item. A branded or changed stock item may have a different minimum because of the paint, printing or packing set-up.

What is the MOQ for custom wooden toys?

Custom production is typically quoted from 1,000 pieces per design. The final quantity depends on the construction, tooling, materials and the level of customisation.

Can I put my logo on a stock item?

Often yes, but the factory has to confirm the method and whether it changes the tested item. A printed logo, a new paint colour or a new carton can affect the specification and the test file.

Which route is faster?

Stock is usually faster because the design, tooling and specification already exist. Custom takes longer because the sample, approval and test steps come first.

Can I start with stock and move to custom later?

Yes. Many buyers test a stock item first, then develop a custom shape or packaging once they know the demand. The reorder specification should be recorded before the first shipment.

Does a custom item always need new testing?

A new item or a changed material combination should be reviewed against the test file. Whether a full new test is needed depends on what changed and the market's rules, but it should not be assumed to be covered.
