Wholesale wooden DIY craft sets: what actually decides the order
These sets sell on the promise printed on the front of the box, so the first question is what the child is being promised: build it, decorate it, or invent with it. Get that wrong and the components can all be correct while the product still does not sell.
Which promise are you selling?
- Build it. Pre-cut parts, hardware and a step sheet, with the finished object as the payoff.
- Paint or decorate it. Plain wood shapes plus paint, brush, glue or stickers, where the finished object is whatever the child makes.
- Open craft. A tray of shapes, offcuts, wheels, pegs and dowels with no fixed outcome - cheapest to produce, hardest to photograph.
Component count and bagging
Count is the visible value and the main cost. It is also where complaints come from: a set that arrives with a missing wheel is a return, and a set where everything is in one mixed bag is a bad afternoon. Bagging by step or by sub-assembly costs a little more at the factory and saves far more in reviews.
Paint, glue and consumables
The moment a set contains paint, glue, crayons or ink, part of the product is an art material rather than a toy, and it has its own rules on top of the toy rules. Anything that can transfer to a hand and then to a mouth has to be assessed for what it releases. We source consumables that come with the right documentation for the destination market, or supply the set wood-only if you prefer to add your own materials locally.
Instructions and language
A build-it set needs a step sheet a child or a parent can follow without a video: exploded view, numbered parts, and a sequence that matches the bagging. Supplying the instructions in your market's language is part of the artwork package rather than an afterthought, and we produce to your approved sample.
Age grading and compliance
DIY sets fall on both sides of the age line. A build-and-play set for five-year-olds is a toy and needs CE marking and EN71 testing in the EU and ASTM F963 compliance with a Children's Product Certificate in the United States. A craft kit for older children can be presented as an art activity instead, with a different rule set - but that has to be a deliberate decision reflected in the age grading, the warnings and the packaging. We produce to EN71 and ASTM F963 requirements and supply the reports covering your order; see the toy safety standards page.
Ordering
In-stock DIY sets start at 50 pieces per item. Samples are charged per item: in-stock items normally leave within 48 hours, custom sampling takes about 10 days, and the fee is deducted from the bulk order at 1,000 pieces. Production runs about 30 days after confirmation. Send your list for a quote, or see private label wooden toys for branded packaging.
Wooden DIY craft set MOQ, samples and lead times
These sets sell on the promise printed on the front of the box, so the first question is what the child is being promised: build it, decorate it, or invent with it.
| Minimum order | 50 pieces per item for in-stock wooden toys. OEM, ODM and private-label items are quoted per product, because the minimum depends on how much of the item is customised. |
|---|---|
| Samples | Items already in the range are usually dispatched within 48 hours. Custom sampling takes about 10 days. |
| Sample credit | The sample fee is deducted from the bulk order once the order for that item reaches 1,000 pieces. |
| Production lead time | Around 30 days after order confirmation, subject to order complexity, material and quantity. |
| Payment | 30 percent T/T deposit in advance with the balance before shipment; final terms are confirmed with your order. |
| Documents | EN71 (EU) and ASTM F963 (US) test reports covering the items you order, CPSIA and the Children's Product Certificate for the United States. |
| Mixed orders | Several categories can be combined into one shipment, so a container can be built from more than one product line. |
How to compare wooden DIY craft set suppliers
Six questions separate a supplier who can run this line year after year from one who can only quote it once.
- Does the factory make it, or buy it in? Ask which plant produces the item and whether the woodworking and the painting happen in the same place. Ours are made in our own 6,000 m2 plant in Yunhe, Zhejiang.
- Are the test reports for this exact item? A report has to name the model you are buying, not a similar one from the same family. We supply the reports that cover the items on your order.
- What happens on the repeat order? Finish, colour and dimensions have to stay put between the first order and the fourth. Automatic woodworking and painting lines are what make that repeatable.
- Who decides the carton? Carton dimensions and packing format move the landed cost more than a small change in unit price, so they belong in the quotation, not in the shipping discussion.
- What is the position on spare parts? Missing or damaged components are the most common after-sales claim on wooden toys; ask how replacements are handled and at what point.
- Which promise is on the box? Build, decorate and invent need different components, different consumables and different instructions.
What usually goes wrong on wooden DIY craft set orders
- Which promise is on the front of the box. Get that wrong and every component can be correct while the product still misses.
- Component count and bagging, which decide the assembly experience and a large part of the cost.
- Instructions and language versions, which are usually finalised last and are the most common reason a shipment waits.
