OEM vs ODM Wooden Toys
The two routes are often presented as a price comparison. They are really a question about who owns the design, and that answer decides your timeline, your tooling and your exclusivity.
What ODM actually means in practice
ODM is often described as buying from a catalogue. In wooden toys it is closer to adapting a proven design to your brand.
- What changes is yours. Colour, finish, size within the existing tooling, branding, packaging and instructions.
- What stays is the base. The construction and the tested material combination remain, which is why the safety file is quicker to produce.
- Exclusivity is available. It is agreed by item and by market, subject to volume, and confirmed in writing before development starts.
- It is the fastest route. For a first range, or for a marketplace test, an adapted existing item is usually the sensible starting point.

ODM and OEM compared
| Starting design | ODM starts from the factory’s own range. OEM starts from your drawing or reference sample. |
|---|---|
| Who owns the design | In ODM the base design is the factory’s and the branding is yours; exclusive rights can be agreed by item and market. In OEM the design is yours. |
| Time to first order | ODM is faster, because the tooling and the drawings already exist and only the finish, colour and packaging change. |
| Sample rounds | Custom sampling takes about 10 days per round in both routes, and OEM projects usually need more rounds than ODM adaptations. |
| Tooling | ODM normally needs none. OEM may need tooling, jigs or new printing, which is quoted with the development. |
| Best fit | ODM for a first range and for speed to market; OEM for a product that has to be uniquely yours. |
What OEM actually means in practice
- It starts with a drawing. Ours, or a reference sample, is reviewed for manufacturability, age-grade safety and cost before anything is quoted.
- The design is yours. Your drawings and tooling are not reused for other customers, and development is carried out to an agreement.
- It needs more rounds. A new construction usually takes more sample rounds than a colour and finish change, and we quote per product rather than from a catalogue price.
- It takes longer to a first order, and in exchange you own a product that no one else is shipping.
See OEM wooden toys for the customisation scope.
How to choose
- Choose ODM when the priority is speed to market, when you are testing a category, or when the base design is good enough that only the branding needs to change.
- Choose OEM when the product is the brand, when the shape or the mechanism is the point, or when a competitor could otherwise ship the same item.
- Choose a hybrid when an ODM base with one OEM modification — a panel, a mechanism or a printed component — gives you the difference you need at a lower cost than a full new design.
- Sequence it. Several of our customers start with an ODM item to open a market and move to an OEM item once the channel is proven.
What we need either way
- The target market, because it decides the test programme and how the labelling has to read.
- The age grade, because the same design is a different test programme for a two-year-old and a four-year-old.
- The quantity per item, so the MOQ and the lead time can be confirmed. In-stock items start at 50 pieces, and custom items are quoted per product.
- Packaging and branding artwork, including the importer details that have to appear on the pack.
Whether the route is ODM or OEM, production takes around 30 days after order confirmation, and the compliance documents are the same set: see the CE marking and ASTM F963 pages.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between OEM and ODM in wooden toys?
In OEM the design starts from your drawing or reference sample and the design is yours. In ODM the design starts from the factory’s own range and is adapted with your colour, finish, branding and packaging.
Which route is cheaper?
ODM is usually cheaper and faster to a first order, because the tooling and drawings already exist. OEM is quoted per product, because the cost follows the design work, the sample rounds and any tooling.
Can we get exclusivity on an ODM item?
Yes. Exclusivity is available by item and by market, subject to volume, and we confirm the terms in writing before development starts.
Can we modify an existing item instead of developing a new one?
Yes, and this hybrid route is common: an ODM base with an OEM modification to a panel, a mechanism or a printed component. It gives you a different product at a lower cost than a full new design.
Will you reuse our design for other customers?
No. Development is carried out to an agreement, and your drawings and tooling are not reused for other customers.
How long does OEM development take?
Custom sampling takes about 10 days per round and OEM projects usually need more rounds than ODM adaptations. Production takes around 30 days after order confirmation once the sample is approved.
