Wooden Toy Manufacturers in Australia
Australia looks like a smaller version of the European market until you reach the mandatory standard for toys for children up to 36 months, which uses a stricter small-parts test than most buyers expect. This page covers what an Australian order has to pass and what our factory supplies against it.
Australian production or factory-direct supply
Australian wooden toy production is small and mostly craft-scale. For a retail or brand range the practical choice is a direct import, and the work that decides whether it goes smoothly is the testing and the supplier record rather than the ocean leg.
AS/NZS ISO 8124 and the ACCC mandatory standard
Australia works from the AS/NZS ISO 8124 series, which is aligned with the international ISO 8124 toy safety standard rather than with EN 71:
- Part 1 covers safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties.
- Part 2 covers flammability.
- Part 3 covers the migration of certain elements.
On top of that, the ACCC mandatory safety standard for toys for children up to and including 36 months of age requires compliance with AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 and uses a small-parts cylinder larger than the ISO one. That is the detail that catches people out: a piece that passes in another market can still fail here, because it is measured against a bigger cylinder and more of the toy counts as a small part.
On a wooden toy this lands squarely on peg puzzles, small blocks, beads and any loose component. If the range includes toys for under-threes, the piece sizes should be settled before the artwork is finalised rather than after. See Australian wooden toy standards and age grading for 0-3 and 3+.
Button and coin batteries
Australia has mandatory standards for button and coin batteries and for consumer goods that contain them, in force since June 2022. Any wooden toy with a sound unit, a light module or a battery compartment falls inside them: the compartment has to be secured so a child cannot reach the cell, and the warning and documentation requirements apply.
It is simpler to know this before a sound module is chosen than after a sample has been approved. Where an item can be supplied either way, we quote both versions.
What the Australian supplier has to do
In Australia the compliance duty sits with the supplier bringing the goods to market, typically the importer, under the Australian Consumer Law. In practice that means holding evidence that the mandatory standard is met, keeping the records that show it, and being able to trace the batch if a problem appears.
We supply the per-item test report against AS/NZS ISO 8124, the material and coating declarations, the item specification and batch identification, so that evidence exists as documents rather than as an assurance.
Cost, MOQ and the container maths
In-stock wooden toys start at 50 pieces per item; custom and private-label items are quoted per product. Production runs around 30 days after confirmation.
Australia is a long freight leg with a high cost per cubic metre, so carton data matters more than it does into Europe. Our carton size, CBM, pieces per carton, gross and net weight and 20 ft / 40 ft loading figures are published: see the wooden toy container loading table.
Shipping to an Australian port
Orders ship from Ningbo or Shanghai, usually FOB with your forwarder, to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Fremantle. Mixed orders consolidate into one shipment, which is usually how a first order keeps the freight per unit sensible.
Retail-ready packaging, carton marks and the Australian importer details on the label are produced to your artwork at the factory. See import requirements by market and retail-ready packaging and labelling.

Frequently asked questions
Which standard applies to wooden toys in Australia?
The AS/NZS ISO 8124 series: Part 1 for mechanical and physical properties, Part 2 for flammability and Part 3 for the migration of certain elements.
What is different about the ACCC standard for children up to 36 months?
It requires compliance with AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 and uses a small-parts cylinder larger than the ISO one, so more of a toy counts as a small part. Items that pass in other markets can still fail it.
Do button batteries affect wooden toys?
They do if the toy contains a button or coin cell. Australia's mandatory standards for button and coin batteries, in force since June 2022, set requirements on the battery compartment, the warnings and the documentation.
Who is responsible for compliance in Australia?
The supplier bringing the goods to market, usually the importer, under the Australian Consumer Law. We supply the test reports, declarations, specification and batch identification that evidence it.
What is the minimum order for an Australian buyer?
In-stock wooden toys start at 50 pieces per item. Custom items are quoted per product, because the minimum depends on tooling and customisation.
How long does an Australian order take?
Catalogue items are usually dispatched within 48 hours and custom sampling takes about 10 days. Production runs around 30 days after confirmation, after which ocean transit is booked by your forwarder.
