Selling Wooden Toys on Amazon US: Compliance Checklist

Amazon's US toys category is one of the fastest routes to market for a wooden toy brand, and also one of the easiest places to have a listing blocked. The requirements are not mysterious - they are the same CPSC rules every US seller has to meet - but they have to be in place before the listing goes live, not after.

1. Documents Amazon will ask for

  • A test report from a CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory, covering ASTM F963 and the CPSIA chemical requirements for the exact item you are listing.
  • A Children's Product Certificate based on that report, in the name of the seller or importer.
  • Product images that match the item, including the packaging if your brand uses retail packaging.

Amazon often asks for these during a category approval review, and again if a customer complaint triggers a safety review. Having the PDFs ready, with the model number matching the listing, is the difference between a two day review and a stranded shipment. The documents themselves are explained in our guide to /knowledges/179.html.

2. Age grade and warnings on the listing

The age grade on the Amazon detail page has to match the age grade on the packaging and in the test report. If the listing says 3+ and the packaging says 18 months+, the listing is inconsistent with the certificate and is likely to be pulled. The same applies to small parts warnings and to any choking hazard statement.

3. Packaging that survives FBA

Toys sold through FBA are handled several times before they reach the customer, and soft retail boxes get crushed. In practice this means:

  • A carton strong enough for the parcel network, with the FNSKU label on the outside and not over a barcode.
  • Any poly bag with an opening of 5 inches or more carrying a suffocation warning.
  • Small parts, marbles and balloons labelled as required by the small parts rule.
  • Assembly instructions inside the box, not printed on the outside only, because the outside gets damaged.

/knowledges/182.html covers cartons, barcodes and warning labels in more detail.

4. Listing content that converts

Wooden toys sell on material, age suitability and what the child actually does with the toy. Bullet points that answer those three questions outperform bullet points that repeat the title. Useful specifics to collect from your supplier: wood species, finish, dimensions, piece count, weight, and the recommended play pattern.

We keep a specification sheet per item for exactly this purpose - the numbers on our product pages come from the same sheet that goes to the testing lab, so they match what you put in the listing.

5. Stock versus private label

There are two routes into Amazon and they need different preparation. Buying stock items is faster: the item already exists, the tooling is paid for and the minimum is 50 pieces per item. Private label means your artwork, your barcode and usually a colour or size change, which adds development time but builds a listing nobody else can copy. See private label wooden toys for how the packaging side works.

6. A realistic first order

Most first Amazon orders we ship are 100 to 500 pieces across three to five items: enough to test demand and to qualify for a better unit price, small enough to correct the range after the first month of data. Keep the number of packaging artworks low in that first run - each artwork is a printing set-up.

If you want a starting point, browse the wholesale range, and send the shortlist with your target retail price through the contact form; we will confirm the compliance path and the container quantity for each item.

Marketplace rules move faster than the standards themselves; the current position is kept in the EU and US toy safety compliance update.

The labelling, carton and certificate side of a marketplace order is covered in wooden toy manufacturer for Amazon sellers, with the underlying limits in CPSIA for wooden toys.
