Wooden Chess Sets - Page 2

Folding and full-size chess sets, boards and pieces in beech and pine. 50 pcs per item, branded boxing and custom labels, EN71 and ASTM F963 tested.

Wooden chess sets sell into two very different markets: the toy and gift trade on one side, and the game, club and premium gift market on the other. Both are served from the same bench, but the specification is different. We manufacture wooden chess and board games in Yunhe, Zhejiang and supply them factory direct to importers, wholesalers and brands.

Wooden chess sets wholesale: gift trade or game trade

The first question on a chess set is which market it is for, because everything else follows from it. A set sold as a children's gift is bought on presentation, price and safety. A set sold to the game trade is bought on board size, square size, piece height and how the pieces are stored between games.

Specifications that define the set

  • Board format. Flat board, folding board with storage inside, or a boxed set with separated compartments.
  • Square and king size. The proportion between the board squares and the piece height is what makes a set feel right to play on; tournament-oriented buyers specify this first.
  • Materials. Solid wood, plywood or MDF, with the light and dark squares either in contrasting species or stained.
  • Piece finishing. Turned pieces, weighted bases, felted undersides, and how crisp the detail survives repeated handling.
  • Extras. Folding travel format, a cloth bag for the pieces, a storage insert, printed rules or a branded sleeve.

Presentation sells this category

Chess sets are bought as gifts far more often than as equipment, so the unpacking experience carries real weight: the box, the insert, the way the pieces sit when the lid opens, and whether the set looks like it is worth the price before the recipient plays a single move. That makes packaging a product decision here, not an afterthought, and it is usually worth settling the box artwork at the same time as the board.

Safety and documentation

Chess sets intended for children are toys and need CE marking and EN71 testing in the EU, plus ASTM F963 compliance, third-party testing and a Children's Product Certificate in the United States. The points that decide a test outcome are sharp edges on turned pieces and board corners, small parts where a base or a felt pad can detach, and paint or stain migration. Sets sold purely as adult games fall outside the toy rules, but most buyers in this category still specify EN71 and ASTM F963 to keep one product safe for every channel.

We produce to both standards and supply the test reports covering the items you order; the certificates we can publish are listed on the toy safety standards page.

Branding and range

Chess sets carry branding well because the box is large and the pieces can be marked. We apply your artwork, barcode and age labelling, and produce to your approved sample. See private label wooden toys and, for a bespoke board or piece design, OEM wooden toys.

Ordering

In-stock sets start at 50 pieces per item. Samples are charged per item: in-stock items are normally dispatched within 48 hours, custom sampling takes about 10 days, and the sample fee is deducted from the bulk order once the order for that item reaches 1,000 pieces. Production typically runs about 30 days after order confirmation. Send your list and we will quote it item by item.

Wooden chess set MOQ, samples and lead times

Chess sets sit between toy and gift, so the questions that decide the order are the board format, the piece storage and whether the board is printed or inlaid.

How to compare wooden chess set suppliers

Six questions separate a supplier who can run this line year after year from one who can only quote it once.

  • Does the factory make it, or buy it in? Ask which plant produces the item and whether the woodworking and the painting happen in the same place. Ours are made in our own 6,000 m2 plant in Yunhe, Zhejiang.
  • Are the test reports for this exact item? A report has to name the model you are buying, not a similar one from the same family. We supply the reports that cover the items on your order.
  • What happens on the repeat order? Finish, colour and dimensions have to stay put between the first order and the fourth. Automatic woodworking and painting lines are what make that repeatable.
  • Who decides the carton? Carton dimensions and packing format move the landed cost more than a small change in unit price, so they belong in the quotation, not in the shipping discussion.
  • What is the position on spare parts? Missing or damaged components are the most common after-sales claim on wooden toys; ask how replacements are handled and at what point.
  • Is the board printed or inlaid? The two processes give different durability and different price points, and both can be produced in house.

What usually goes wrong on wooden chess set orders

  • Board format decided late. Folding and fixed boards need different tooling, different packaging and different retail price points.
  • Piece storage treated as a detail. Loose pieces in a plain box generate more complaints than the board itself, and a felt-lined insert or a cloth bag is cheap insurance.
  • Printed and inlaid boards confused in the briefing. They look similar in a photograph but behave differently after a year of handling.
